Union
sema
The symbol represents two lungs attached to the trachea. The whole is a natural symbol for the concept of unity, in this case for the unificationof Upper and Lower Egypt. Other elements were added to the sema hieroglyph - usually fecundity figures associated with the Upper and Lower Nile or the two figures of Horus and Seth as symbols of Upper and Lower Egypt. Later, the sign was used in funerary contexts to associate the deceased with royal figures or even changing the deceased into a royal being in the afterlife. sema - Union
Upper Egyptian
Shrine
Per-wer, kar
The vulture goddess Nekhbet was worshipped at the southern site of El Kab (ancient Nekheb) where she had a pavilion-like shrine. When neighbouring Hierakonpolis became the royal residence of the kings of Egypt, Nekhbet assumed the role of national goddess and her shrine, known as the "Per-wer" (Great House), became a symbol of the entire southern region (Upper Egypt). The icon shown here has a sloping roof and cavetto cornice - the type of portable shrine that housed the image of the god in temples throughout Egypt. kar - Upper Egyptian Shrine
